Today, KD and I took a trail ride up an old trail, along the King Salmon Creek basin, This trail was made by a military unit for manuever training, back in the 1960's. Nowadays, it is used primarily by hunters, for wilderness access, during the hunting season. The trail has not been maintained for nearly 40 years and has deteriorated significantly since it's construction. From the access point, near King Salmon, Alaska, the trail winds for 21+ miles into the wilderness area, adjacent to Katmai Mational Park. It is hard to imagine the numbers and size of the mosquitos that thrive in this habitat. Besides the cool weather, we were compelled to keep everything covered-up and remain constantly moving, just to survive the attacks of the @&*# little blood suckers. The approximate 45 mile trip took most of the day. We are both very tired, but the scenery was incredible and totally worth the effort.
